Analysis of Lateral In-House Talent Moves (June 2022 - December 2022)

The data for this section has been collected by tracking mandate closures by Vahura, as well as by using secondary sources such as information shared on social media platforms, news and relevant media publications. The sample group of this report’s study focuses on lateral moves made in the Indian Corporate legal industry, between the months of June 2022 to December 2022. The analysis takes into consideration years of professional experience, location, industry domains and remuneration changes. After collating and analyzing the information collected, we present a few of our key observations.

From June to December of this year, similar to the first 6 months of the FY, organizations from the BFSI, IT/ITES and Internet sectors have hired the most number of lawyers. We have seen a drop in the hiring of lawyers within the Internet sector organizations as we see their hiring market share has gone down from 14% in the first 6 months to 9.72%.

In this period (June to December 2022), we saw more hires in Bangalore than in other cities in India. Mumbai, which used to be the destination with the most in-house legal hires in the previous Financial years, dropped to fourth place. Hiring in cities such as Pune and Hyderabad has seen considerable growth in the last 6 months.

There has been a close to 20% jump in hiring of professionals with less than 3 years of experience. Close to 70% of the hiring in this period has been of professionals with less than 7 years of experience, which is 18% more than our last reported numbers. Within this segment, the highest demand has been still for legal professionals between 3 to 7 years of experience.

The largest talent source for the In-house legal departments has been lawyers from other in-house legal departments. We also see a decrease in the number of professionals hired with prior law firm experience to be more than in our last report.
